Dr Wikesjo will present rhBMP-2 for Improved Bone Remodeling at the Australasian Osseointegration Society Limited, 5th Biennial Conference, Nobel Biocare Platinum Sponsor Program, in Canberra, Australia, October 19-22, 2005.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am pleased to share with you that at the Nobel Biocare World Conference in Las Vegas, NV, June 9, 2005, a research team from the Laboratory for Applied Periodontal & Craniofacial Regeneration, Nobel Biocare, and Wyeth Research introduced the first bone inductive dental implant; a titanium implant that makes its own normal physiologic bone. The principals behind this development in addition to myself are Jan Hall, MSc, Nobel Biocare, and John M Wozney, PhD, Wyeth Research. This unique implant marries a purpose-designed titanium porous oxide surface (TiUnite) with recombinant human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 (rhBMP-2). This first in tissue engineering may not only make current treatment protocols more predictable eliminating a need for grafting and guided bone regeneration procedures but also result in a dramatic paradigm shift in implant dentistry as well as give directs for parallel developments in orthopedics.
